Soon after assuming power the LDF Government took effective steps to strengthen the public distribution system in the State. The quality and quantity of the ration articles were improved for attracting more card holders to ration shops.  In order to rectify the irregularities in ration distribution and to prevent diversion of ration articles.  Special squads to inspect ration wholesale/retail depots and open market have been working effectively. These squads inspected 258989 ration retail and wholesale centres. Licenses of 418 ration retail shops and 40 wholesale centres were cancelled. These checking squads have been constituted with the cooperation of departments like Police, Legal Metrology and Revenue under the leadership of District Collector.

The percentage of APL cardholders utilizing the ration shop is now 15 percent as against three percent at the time of UDF Government.

Food Security Made Possible

Kerala is vulnerable to food scarcity and consequent sporadic price-rise as we are dependent on other states for the major part of the articles of daily use.  The LDF Government was in the know of this situation from the beginning and hence made persistent efforts to intervene in the market and stabilise prices.  No wonder, even when the centre slashed the food allocation to Kerala to one tenth of the State’s quota prices did not go beyond rates at which they were available in other states. Rs. 2 a Kg. Rice & Wheat for the Very Poor

LDF Government launched the Rs.2 a kg. rice and wheat distribution scheme to the very poor on May 22, 2009, marking its third anniversary celebration.  Under this scheme 26 lakh families in the state will be benefited.

 

The scheme will cover all the BPL cardholders in the state besides APL cardholders in the SC/ST communities, fisherfolk and beneficiaries of the Ashraya Scheme of the Social Welfare Department.

 

The scheme is expected to incur a liability of Rs.228.5 crore by the government. During June and July beneficiaries of the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) are to be provided 10 kg.of rice at Rs.2 per kg.  During the inauguration the Food and Civil Supplies Minister called upon the new MPs from the state to fight for the restoration of the state’s share of APL rice that had been slashed by the centre. 

 

Events

Each above-poverty-line card holder will be given 10 Kg. raw rice at Rs. 16 per Kg. through ration shops in order to hold down the price of rice in open market.
